High-quality time synchronization software improves cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability of financial trading, gaming, and database applications
New appliance reduces entry price for sub-microsecond, gigabit Ethernet, resilient TimeSynchronization.
AUSTIN – December 11, 2013 – FSMLabs, provider of software and hardware for high-precision time synchronization and distribution, today announced that it has launched its TimeKeeper® Pocket GrandMaster appliance, which radically reduces initial entry price for firms requiring high-precision time distribution and gigabit Ethernet connectivity.
The Pocket GrandMaster solution is a smaller, lower cost, lighter and lower power consumption alternative to the TimeKeeper Enterprise GrandMaster Clock appliance. The Pocket GrandMaster provides all the plug-and-play functionality, precision, time source cross check, traceable audit, and web management found in the FSMLabs Enterprise GrandMaster for customers who don’t require Enterprise GrandMaster features such as the 10GBps connectivity, hot swappable power supplies, network management via IPMI, and longer term log file storage. All of FSMLabs’ GrandMaster Appliances are designed from the ground up for the Financial Trading market and can be integrated into existing networks with minimal IT staff resource overhead. In addition, all of FSMLabs GrandMaster Appliances can use GPS signals, pulse-per-second or network (NTP, PTP, PTP-unicast/telecom) as reference time sources and can generate all those sources for downstream clients.
As with the TimeKeeper Enterprise GrandMaster, the Pocket GrandMaster has the ability to cross check multiple sources of time and to failover from one source to another in case of problems. For example, if the Pocket GrandMaster sees a problem with the GPS source (jamming or spoofing), it can failover to a network PTP or NTP feed while using the high-quality oscillator to continue to serve very high-precision time. The TimeKeeper Pocket GrandMaster delivers high data integrity, allowing firms to detect abnormal activity such as GPS spoof attacks, jamming attacks, and equipment failures that can often go unnoticed by a firm’s trading desk. It also alleviates issues such as human error and delays in time data, which can cause trading algorithms to misfire and ultimately compromise trade execution.
“Time synchronization has become an important resource for financial institutions and government agencies in providing a comprehensive, reliable audit trail of core business activities,” said Victor Yodaiken, CEO, FSMLabs. “TimeKeeper Appliances and Software offer “out-of-the-box” functionality that can radically simplify time distribution operation and support.”
He continued, “Our Pocket GrandMaster brings precision and reliability to firms at a much lower cost and resource overhead. We are accelerating our effort to make time distribution and synchronization an integral part of any enterprise computing environment.”

AUSTIN – Oct 24, 2013 – To successfully execute on complex trading strategies and to stay in compliance, a firm must know the exact time that events happen, such as ticks, trades, and computed correlations. If a time stamp is off, it could be the difference between a successful trade and a debilitating business challenge. For the last 4 years, FSMLabs has provided some of the world’s leading financial trading firms software and hardware for high-precision time synchronization and distribution to prevent intentional and accidental time errors, manage compliance, and guard against malicious attacks. However, a large number of financial firms still do not recognize just how easily time can be compromised.
For financial institutions, time synchronization is imperative to providing an audit trail, staying profitable, and protecting against cyber crimes. Typically, reference time comes from GPS satellites. Yet, the networks in which the time is distributed and the computer systems that receive it are not instantaneous and can introduce delays that can cripple trading. In addition, a human error, such as a harmless misconfiguration or a deliberate sabotage, like GPS spoofing, can lose, corrupt, or radically delay time data, causing trading algorithms to misfire and compromising the audit trail of trades.
“The lack of industry knowledge about just how easily time distribution can be broken still surprises me,” said Victor Yodaiken, CEO, FSMLabs. “Organizations are either throwing a lot of money at ‘solutions’ that are not created for the enterprise, or they are simply unaware of the issue. It is critical that financial organizations take time synchronization seriously. With the threat of cyber attacks on GPS radio signals, combined with inevitable human error, and increasing regulatory demands, organizations need a time synchronization solution that will keep them out of the headlines and ensure they remain in good standing and profitable.”
FSMLabs’ TimeKeeper® software and hardware suite was specifically designed for financial institutions to protect against all types of time errors. The end-to-end solution uses multiple GPS sources connected to different antennas and network-time feeds to ensure time synchronization, monitoring, and management. TimeKeeper detects even subtle changes to time sources and rapidly switches to alternative sources. The solution also:
• Synchronizes networks to the sub-microsecond range
• Monitors and compares time sources to protect against network attacks and errors and ensure an auditable trace to document due diligence and forensics
• Supports a range of technologies and both the NTP and PTP 1588 time protocols, ensuring minimal disruption to existing applications or IT systems
• Improves speed to receive time data from operating systems
• Minimizes time spent configuring, patching and reorganizing networks and fighting with solutions that were never intended for the enterprise

FSMLabs Releases TimeKeeper 6.0
FSMLabs Releases TimeKeeper 6.0 with new support for extended timing networks, network administration and resiliency
Newest release is a major step toward enterprise time precision and management
Austin, TX – May 30, 2012 – FSMLabs® today announced the 6.0 release of TimeKeeper™, its groundbreaking time synchronization software for high-frequency trading and other applications requiring extreme time precision. The newest iteration of TimeKeeper addresses expansion of high-precision time synchronization across networks, including cloud and other beyond-the-wall environments. In addition, it now offers a web-based management console, as well as oversight of time performance across network components.
FSMLabs® today announced that TimeKeeper™ time synchronization software and the Solarflare® SFN5322F Dual-Port 10GbE Precision Time Synchronization Server Adapter were benchmarked with time distribution accuracy as precise as 300 nanoseconds. Three separate, logged, multi-hour runs were performed by FSMLabs in response to a request by a high-frequency trading and hedge fund firm. The test was run using Precision Time Protocol in a plug-and-play mode with no special configuration.
“For high-frequency trading, a variance of a microsecond in time accuracy can be an operational risk issue that destroys competitive advantage,” said Cort Dougan, chief technology officer of FSMLabs. “The test with Solarflare was required by a highly competitive firm, and these results clearly support their trading strategies. TimeKeeper provides many additional benefits to trading operations, including fastest time delivery into application software, multi-time source management, and performance logging across the network. But time precision in the sub-microsecond range is the foundation requirement, and this is unquestionably available in this configuration.”
“Solarflare enables its customers to build the highest-performance, lowest-latency, and most scalable 10GbE networks in the industry. For aggressive trading firms using every technological advantage, our SFN5322F and its onboard Stratum 3 clock are best in class for data transport with high-precision synchronized clocking,” said Bruce Tolley, Solarflare’s vice president of solutions marketing. “We are pleased to have worked with FSMLabs to deliver this breakthrough solution for the distribution of high-precision time. We look forward to partnering together with common customers in the trading and financial services markets.”
